A major change may soon be seen in the rules of taxi and public transport in Delhi. Now the government is going to take a big step towards promoting electric vehicles and shared transportation in the capital which is struggling with pollution. The Delhi government has agreed in principle that private electric cars (Private EVs) will also be able to hit the roads in the future as sharing taxis. This decision will not only open new avenues of earning for the common people, but will also see a big change in the model of cab aggregators like Ola-Uber.
Aggregator companies like Ola, Uber, Rapido and vehicle manufacturers like Tata Motors, Mahindra, Maruti Suzuki, Toyota and Honda participated in an important meeting chaired by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta. It was decided in the meeting that shared taxi services will be promoted in the capital and for this necessary amendments will be made in the existing rules. The government has clarified that changes in rules will be made soon to include private EVs and BS-VI vehicles as taxis.
Start of share taxi
In this meeting, the cab companies assured that they will start shared taxi services within a month. The special thing is that these services will also include taxis driven by women drivers, which will promote both women’s safety and employment. Along with this, shuttle service on the Ring Road and special shared services to and from the airport are also being considered.
Emphasis on passenger safety
The Chief Minister directed the aggregator companies to give top priority to passenger safety. He said that control of pollution in Delhi is possible only when the number of vehicles on the roads is reduced and people adopt sharing transportation. In this direction, it has also been suggested to connect e-rickshaw with the aggregator platform.
Charging Infrastructure Plan
It was also discussed in the meeting that it is necessary to strengthen the charging infrastructure to promote electric vehicles. The government talked about providing land for setting up charging stations, while the companies were asked to take the responsibility of charging and battery waste management through solar energy.
