The shortage of LPG cylinders across the country is now affecting the catering services of Indian Railways as well. Due to this crisis, the system of providing food in trains of Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) is being affected. In view of the situation, Railways is considering temporarily stopping the service of serving cooked food in trains and giving refund to the passengers who have already booked food with the tickets. According to the news of news18, IRCTC has directed its catering licensees to implement alternative arrangements (contingency plan) to ensure that there is no disruption in food service to the passengers.

Impact on IRCTC base kitchen

According to railway officials, the shortage of LPG is having the biggest impact on the base kitchen of IRCTC. It is in these base kitchens that food is prepared for the trains and later loaded into the pantry cars. Pantry cars are primarily used for food delivery and reheating and generally do not carry LPG cylinders. But now due to difficulties in preparing food in the base kitchen, the process of preparing food for long distance trains is being affected.

In a letter issued on March 10, IRCTC has directed food plazas, refreshment rooms and Jan Aahar outlets located at railway stations to adopt cooking arrangements using alternative fuels or other methods in case of shortage of LPG, so that passengers do not face any problem in providing food.

Restaurant and hotel associations have expressed concern

Earlier, the Restaurant and Hotel Association expressed concern that in cities like Bengaluru, Pune and Mumbai, they may have to close their operations if the crisis caused by the shortage of commercial LPG cylinders continues. He has demanded immediate intervention of the government on this issue. National Restaurant Association of India (NRAI) President Sagar Daryani said that restaurants are already considering limited menus or working at different times.
