Uttar Pradesh is rapidly moving towards the identity of Expressway State. A huge grid of 22 expressways is being built in the state, which includes greenfield and link expressways. In this series, Ganga Expressway, Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway and Ghazipur-Ballia Expressway are going to be opened for the general public soon. As soon as these projects start, travel from Delhi to Purvanchal will become easy, fast and convenient.
Ganga Expressway
The Ganga Expressway being built from Meerut to Prayagraj is one of the most ambitious projects of the state. It will connect districts like Meerut, Hapur, Bulandshahr, Amroha, Sambhal, Badaun, Shahjahanpur, Hardoi, Unnao, Rae Bareli, Pratapgarh and Prayagraj. More than 96% of the main carriageway work has been completed and the trial of the FASTag toll system has also been successful. There is a possibility that it will be fully started in March. As soon as it becomes operational, the distance from Western UP to Purvanchal will reduce significantly.
Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway
The approximately 63 km long Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway (NE-6) is a 6-lane access-controlled route, which can be expanded to 8 lanes in the future. An 18-19 km long elevated section has been built on it, which makes it the longest elevated expressway in the state. At present the journey from Lucknow to Kanpur is completed in 2.5 to 3 hours, but after its commencement this distance can be covered in just 35 to 45 minutes. The project cost is around Rs 4700 crore and is likely to be commissioned by the end of March 2026 or by April.
Gorakhpur-Shamli Expressway
The proposed Gorakhpur-Shamli Expressway, about 750 km long, will be the longest expressway in UP. It will pass through 22 districts and will directly connect Western UP with Purvanchal. Its DPR has been completed and land acquisition work is going on at a fast pace. Construction work is expected to begin in 2026-27.
Neighboring states will also benefit
States like Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh will also benefit from these expressway projects. Industrial investment, tourism and trade will get new momentum. Yogi Adityanath government has allocated Rs 15 thousand crore in the budget for the construction and maintenance of roads.
