In the era of rapidly growing infrastructure, where a network of roads and expressways is being laid, unique initiatives are also being seen to create a balance between development and environment. A special animal overpass being built on the Chennai-Bengaluru Expressway is an example of this. Through this overpass, vehicles will pass from below and wild animals will be able to cross the road safely from above. The National Highway Authority (NHAI) has said that a special bridge will be built inside the Mahimandalam Reserve Forest, so that wild animals can move from one side to the other safely and without any hindrance.
What is a wildlife overpass?
Wildlife overpass is a special bridge, which is built over the busy highway in such a way that wild animals can cross the road without any danger. This reduces human-wildlife conflict and also reduces the risk of road accidents. Mahimandalam Reserve Forest, located between Vellore and Ranipet, is home to many important wildlife species such as Indian gaur, panther, wild boar and deer. In such a situation, the construction of this overpass here is being considered a very important step.
The overpass will be 90 meters long and 25 meters wide.
According to NHAI, this overpass will be 90 meters long, 25 meters wide and about 5.5 meters high above the road. Its design has been prepared in such a way that the animals have the experience of the natural environment and they can use it without any fear. This step will not only ensure the safety of wildlife, but will also create a safe and smooth journey for the travelers on the highway.
Artificial grass field will also be ready
To give a natural look to the overpass, an artificial grass field is also being developed in collaboration with Tamil Nadu Forest Department. This grassy area will act as a natural camouflage, making the structure blend into the surrounding forest and making the animals feel comfortable.
balance of development and nature
The approximately 258 km long four-lane Chennai-Bengaluru Expressway is one of the major infrastructure projects in the country. Its foundation stone was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in May 2022.
