
Union Labor and Employment Minister Mansukh Mandaviya told the Rajya Sabha on Thursday that during the last one year, employment has been provided to 2.22 crore people through more than 18,000 job fairs organized across the country. He said that the pace of employment generation in the country is continuously increasing and the unemployment rate has come down to 3.2 percent. Responding to supplementary questions during Question Hour, the Minister said that to provide employment, the government has developed the National Career Service (NCS) portal as an integrated platform, which is working as a single window platform for all job related services.
11.49 lakh appointments were made in the government sector
According to the news, Mandaviya said that the Central Government has so far organized 18,000 employment fairs, through which 11.49 lakh appointments have been made in the government sector. He said that the NCS portal has been continuously strengthened over the last decade and currently 55 lakh companies are linked to it, while the employment platforms of all state governments are also linked to it. According to the minister, more than 6 crore youth have registered on the NCS portal in the last 10 years. He also informed that the portal has been linked to e-Migrate, Yuva Bharat and Skill Development platforms to ensure a single window system for employment.
Bihar 39.8 lakh youth shortlisted
Referring to Bihar, the minister said that 53 lakh people in the state registered on NCS, out of which 39.8 lakh youth were shortlisted and employment opportunities were created for them. Apart from this, 4.5 lakh youth participated in the job fair, out of which 90 thousand were shortlisted and 43 thousand got jobs. In his written reply, the Minister clarified that job fairs are an important part of the government’s commitment to provide employment to the youth. The objective of these fairs is to establish direct contact between employers and job seekers as per the needs of the local labor market. Till January 20, 2026, 3,280 job fairs were organized under the NCS project in Bihar, in which 8,492 employers participated. However, it is not mandatory to share the final appointment data on the NCS portal.
17 crore employment opportunities created by the central government in a decade
Responding to another question, the minister said that according to RBI data for 2024, 17 crore employment opportunities have been created by the central government in the last decade. At the same time, between 2004 and 2014, employment increased by 2.9 crores. According to the latest data of 2024, the total employment opportunities in the country have increased to 64.33 crore. On the question asked about gig workers, Mandaviya said that this is an emerging sector of employment, due to which a large number of people are getting work. According to estimates, about 2 crore gig workers are employed in the country. He said that the new labor codes will play an important role in providing social and health security to these workers.
