
Inflation in Delhi last financial year was much lower than other metro cities and the national average, especially in the fuel and power group, according to a report by the Delhi government’s Directorate of Economics and Statistics. According to PTI news, the report assessed the Consumer Price Index i.e. CPI – IW between Delhi and 14 other major metro cities. These cities include Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Indore, Faridabad, Ghaziabad, Bhopal, Chandigarh, Varanasi, Amritsar and Lucknow.
Third lowest consumer price index
According to the report, Kolkata recorded the highest inflation rate of 3.6% in the financial year 2024-25, while the national average was 3.4%. This was followed by Mumbai (3.0%), Delhi (1.8%) and Chennai (no change). Among the 15 major cities included in the report, Delhi recorded the third lowest consumer price index for the 2024 calendar year and the fifth lowest consumer price index for the financial year 2024-25. At the same time, Lucknow and Chandigarh had the highest inflation rates.
Inflation rate remained lower than the national average
Inflation rate in Delhi has been lower than the national average in the last few years. Especially in 2020, 2021, 2023 and 2024, the inflation rate in Delhi remained lower than the national average. Delhi’s inflation rate in 2022 was higher than the national average. Last year, the inflation rate in Delhi stood at 1.7%, while the national average was recorded at 3.8%. Between 2020 and 2024, inflation measured by the consumer price index in Delhi ranged between 1.7% and 8%.
Inflation rate in different groups-
- Food and beverages: 5.6% in 2024 (4.6% in 2023)
- Paan, betel nut, tobacco and intoxicants: No change in 2024 (3.7% in 2023)
- House/Housing: 3.1% in 2024 (2.2% in 2023)
- Fuel and electricity: -20.1% in 2024 (3.7% in 2023)
- Miscellaneous – medicines, education, transportation, personal care, etc.): 0.1% in 2024 (3.5% in 2023)
The report said that the highest decline in inflation rate in Delhi was seen in the fuel and electricity group, while a slight increase was recorded in the food-drink and housing group.
