
In view of the rapidly increasing demand for travel, Indian Railways will double its capacity to introduce new trains from major cities in the next 5 years from the current level. Railways says that the existing infrastructure will also have to be expanded so that the needs of the coming years can be met. Work will be done to double the originating capacity by 2030. Minister of Railways, Information and Broadcasting, and Electronics and Information Technology Shri Ashwini Vaishnav said on Friday that we are expanding coaching terminals in different cities, increasing sectional and operational capacities to meet the increasing demand of passengers and reduce congestion. This step will upgrade our railway network and improve connectivity across the country.
These will be important tasks
The existing terminals will be expanded with additional platforms, stabling lines, pit lines and adequate shunting facilities. New terminals will be identified and constructed in and around urban areas. Maintenance facilities, including Mega Coaching Complex. Also, emphasis will be laid on increasing sectional capacity with traffic facilitation works, signaling upgradation, and multitracking required to handle increased trains at different points.

All the above proposed works will be done keeping in mind both sub-urban and non-sub-urban rail traffic. While planning, special attention will be paid to the different operational and passenger needs of both the segments, so that the capacity expansion can be balanced and effective. A holistic and long-term plan for 48 major cities is being considered by the Railways. The scheme will cover all the works which are in the planning stage, proposed or already sanctioned with the aim of doubling the capacity of handling trains within the stipulated timeline. Under this comprehensive initiative, Railways aims not only to reduce congestion but also to make rail services across the country more accessible, efficient and reliable keeping in mind the future growing travel demand.
