Questions have been raised for a long time regarding the safety of women traveling alone in cabs. Now the Central Government has taken an important and relief step in this direction. App-based cab services like Ola, Uber, Rapido have been directed to provide women passengers the option to choose a woman driver during booking. The government believes that this facility will provide women a more safe and reliable travel experience.
According to this instruction issued by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, women passengers will get this option only when women drivers are available in the concerned area. That is, this facility will be completely based on availability, but wherever possible, women will be given the freedom to choose the driver of their choice. This is being considered a big safety net for women traveling alone, especially late at night.
New instructions to states
In this regard, the Central Government has also instructed all the states to implement these new rules for app-based cab services. However, at present no clear deadline has been set for implementing these rules. Earlier in July 2025, the government had issued basic guidelines for motor vehicle aggregators, in which states were given three months to implement them. Now this new provision related to women’s safety is being considered an important extension in the same direction.
Driver tip rules changed
Along with women passengers, the government has also changed the rules related to drivers. Now after completion of the cab journey, passengers will be able to tip the driver as per their wish. That means tipping will be completely voluntary and will not be added in any way during booking or travel. The option to tip in the app will appear only after the trip is over.
full tip to driver
The government has also made it clear that the entire tip received from passengers will be that of the driver and no company will have any claim on it. This will bring transparency in the earnings of drivers and give them better incentives.
