The year 2025 seems to be writing an interesting story in the Indian automobile market. While on one hand the dominance of SUVs is continuously increasing and their share in the passenger vehicle segment has reached about 55 percent, on the other hand a sedan car has surprised everyone. For a long time, SUVs were considered the first choice of Indian customers, but this year Maruti Suzuki’s Dezire has challenged this trend.
Between January and November 2025, Maruti Suzuki Dezire has registered sales of about 1.95 lakh units and with this it has become the best-selling car of the year. This is a historic achievement in itself, as this is only the second time in the last 41 years that a sedan has become the best-selling car in India. Interestingly, earlier also in 2018, the same car (Dezire) had reached this milestone.
SUV segment
Talking about the SUV segment, vehicles like Hyundai Creta and Mahindra Scorpio are still performing well, but the increasing popularity of Dezire has definitely challenged their claim to dominance. Creta Creta is in second place with sales of around 1.87 lakh units so far in 2025, while Tata Nexon remains at number three with sales of around 1.81 lakh units.
WagonR also favorite car
Maruti Suzuki WagonR is at fourth place in the top-5 list, which has once again proved that Indian customers still like reliable and affordable options. About 1.79 lakh units of WagonR have been sold. At the fifth position was Maruti Suzuki Ertiga MPV, whose sales have reached around 1.75 lakh units.

It is clear from this top-5 list that Maruti Suzuki’s dominance still continues in the Indian market. The company’s models seem to be meeting the needs of customers in different segments. The success of Dezire also shows that it is not just high ground clearance or SUV looks, but affordable pricing, mileage and reliable performance that are equally important for today’s customer.
