
Delhi The government is emphasizing on increasing the metro network to control pollution in the capital. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said on Sunday that the government has increased the budget of the Transport Department by 60 percent to Rs 9110 crore for the financial year 2025-26. The Chief Minister said that adequate arrangements have been made to expand the metro network so that there is no hindrance in the existing projects. Rekha Gupta stressed the need for a strong public transport system to effectively control pollution in Delhi-NCR, ensuring last-mile connectivity without any problems or interruptions.
Allocation for metro projects increased 6 times
Citing data from the Center for Science and Environment and other institutions, the Chief Minister said that smoke emitted from vehicles is a major cause of pollution in Delhi-NCR and it is necessary to strengthen public transport to reduce dependence on private vehicles. He said that the Delhi government has made a lot of provisions in the budget for public transport in accordance with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of net zero emissions. The Chief Minister said the allocation for the Transport Department has been increased from Rs 5702 crore in 2024-25 to Rs 9110 crore in 2025-26, while the allocation for Metro projects has increased almost 6 times to Rs 2929 crore from around Rs 500 crore last year.
Cabinet approves 3 corridors of metro project
Rekha Gupta further said that the Cabinet has approved 3 corridors of Phase-IV MRTS – Lajpat Nagar to Saket, Indralok to Indraprastha and Rithala to Kundli, for which Delhi Government will bear the financial responsibility of Rs 3386.18 crore. He said that Rs 940 crore has already been released in the current financial year and the next installment of Rs 336 crore is in process. Outstanding liabilities of about Rs 2700 crore related to Delhi Metro Project Phase I, II, and III are also being cleared.
