Amidst the increasing pollution in many big cities of the country, the Maharashtra government has taken a big decision for vehicle owners. The state government has proposed to double the green tax on old and more polluting vehicles in the budget of 2026-27. This decision can have a direct impact on lakhs of vehicle owners, especially those who are driving vehicles that are several years old. The government says that the main objective of this step is to reduce pollution in the state and to motivate people to adopt new technology vehicles.

Tax burden on old vehicles will increase

It has been proposed in the budget that the green tax on private vehicles with BS-4 or older emission norms will be doubled. According to the government, such vehicles emit more smoke and cause more harm to the environment. This is the reason why now a plan is being made to gradually reduce the use of these vehicles. If this proposal is implemented then people who have an old car or bike may have to pay more tax than before. This will also increase their total running cost.

You will get benefit by scrapping old car

The government has not only shown strictness but has also tried to provide relief to vehicle owners. It is also proposed in the budget that if a person scraps his old car and buys a new one in its place, he will get a special exemption in motor vehicle tax. According to the government proposal, if a person scraps a BS-4 or above vehicle, he can get tax rebate of up to 16% while buying a new vehicle. There is a possibility of getting tax relief of up to 30% on scrapping a BS-3 or older vehicle.

trying to reduce pollution

The government believes that the air quality in cities is deteriorating rapidly and old vehicles have a major contribution in this. Vehicles with new technology emit less smoke and also reduce fuel consumption. In such a situation, the government wants that people should gradually replace old vehicles with new and environment-friendly vehicles.

Auto sector can also benefit

An impact of this decision can also be seen on the automobile sector. Experts believe that when people scrap old vehicles and buy new vehicles, sales in the auto industry may increase. This is also expected to give new impetus to the industry.
